About Us

Georgia Webber

Teacher, director, whatever! she/her

I started teaching comics because I love to talk about comics with other people, I have always cared deeply about teaching.

I used to teach in person, because I had a bias that it was always better to teach and to learn in the same physical location together. My teaching experiences were exciting, but also difficult: my values often directly contradict the conditions I was teaching under, and I have chronic health conditions that require more flexibility than teaching jobs could offer me.

So I made up my own job: Drawing the Inside Out. This project, now a business, is founded in my values and supports my body in ways that traditional employment does not. One of the ways it supports my health? I LOVE IT SO MUCH!

My approach has a process-oriented, growth-focused, liberatory framework for spreading the good of comics, the support of community, and the magic of self-discovery through and beyond each of us, into the world.

This was a lot to take on as an individual, and I feel so lucky to now be part of a TEAM of beautiful artists who make this work run smoothly, and continue evolving this business according to our shared ethics. Meet these wonderful people below!

Hannah Jill Johnston

Admin, she/her

Hello! :) thanks for stopping by. My name’s Hannah and I’m a Jewish cartoonist and fiber artist from New Jersey. I am currently an MFA Writing student at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In my work, I’m passionate about exploring the power and haunting of girlhood, how to live in a body, friendship, and mental health. My current obsessions include Survivor and Ruffles potato chips. I’m so excited to be working with DTIO because I deeply value community and uplifting each other.

Media, they/them

Hi, I’m Meg (they/them) and I’m excited to be here :) I’m a learning comics artist from Florida, based in Durham, NC. My work most often explores queerness, disability, anti-capitalism, and daily life (not mutually exclusive themes!). I am an eager student of abolition and storytelling, which I see as powerful modes for expanding our collective imagination in pursuit of better worlds (they’re possible!).

I care deeply about practicing forms of community care, labor, and education that move beyond and against capitalism and social hierarchy. I’m stoked to be a part of Drawing the Inside Out, which I find to be a model for creative community and knowledge-sharing informed by this ethos. As a comics artist and cultural worker in their early stages, I am excited to learn from the operations of such an intimate comics education space—and I’m grateful for the guidance and community support that comes with it!

Work trade, she/her

Hello! I am a multidisciplinary artist, mostly making comics and illustrations that explore our biggest and deepest feelings. I am always looking for ways to visualize my emotions and to explain what is happening in my mind and body through my work. Georgia's work speaks to me so deeply, and the opportunity to learn from her in exchange for helping her run her business will help me grow in many ways as an artist! Making art can be so vulnerable and isolating, especially if you work alone. It's so wonderful to find mentorship and community in spaces like Drawing the Inside Out!

Work trade, she/her

My name is Jess(she/her). I live and play in K'jipuktuk (Halifax) Nova Scotia. I am a library worker by day and a contracted assistant for a local business by night!

I also founded the Halifax chapter of Queer Run Club! For me, this work trade for DTIO is an opportunity to create a container of devotion to my own creative practice and allows me to further explore drawing as a somatic experience.

I am an incorrigible Aries who loves to watch local wrestling with pals & dunk my body in the ocean whenever I can. My love language is being asked to control the car radio.

Work trade, they/them

I am not a visual artist. As a poet, writer, and musician far more comfortable with words and sounds, I had known about Georgia’s classes for some time, but it wasn’t until being diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease that I made the choice to join Drawing Health. This class quickly became my favorite part of every week—not only a place to explore drawing without judgment or the goal of being “good,” but to explore my relationship with this new, sick body through the same lens. Georgia’s teachings made their way into the writing workshops I lead throughout the Hudson Valley, NY, inspiring many new lessons and ideas for my classes. Being a work-trade member of Georgia’s team may have been essential for financial reasons, but more importantly, it has given me the opportunity to help build and expand the community that has embraced me. Though I am still a very bad visual artist, I don’t mind. Even bad drawings communicate, connecting us to ourselves and each other.

Valerie Light

I grew up artistic and closeted queer in an ugly part of the rust belt in western Pennsylvania. As soon as I could after Y2K I loaded my art skills and all of my baggage onto a plane out of town, and I think I am just now looking back. During the 20 years between now and then, I’ve worked as a scenic artist and designer for theater projects in the NYC area and all over the world. I hustled till it hurt and then girl-bossed my butt off and then burned out pretty hard. After that, I got a great therapist and changed so much of how I interact with work and art and identity and anxiety and the world.
